The Design and Testing of Rab Products
We wanted to share a couple of videos from Rab about the design and testing of their products. Most of us don't think twice about the research and development that goes into outdoor clothing — but as these videos show, a lot more goes into design than you'd think. It's why Rab carry the tagline "For the most extreme conditions in the world".
The first video covers the general design and testing process behind Rab's clothing and equipment — from concept through to real-world testing in genuinely extreme conditions.
A second video looks specifically at the technology and construction behind Rab's down products. Do you know the difference between fill power and fill weight? Fill power measures the loft, or warmth-to-weight quality, of the down itself — how much space a given weight of down fills when it lofts. Fill weight is simply the total quantity of down inside the product. A higher fill power means the same warmth for less weight, while fill weight determines the overall warmth of the finished item. One interesting detail from the video: Rab sleeping bags are made and filled in the UK and shipped to retailers unpacked, so there's no long-term compression storage before the product even reaches you.
