Leatherman Skeletool
The Leatherman Skeletool is a really handy tool to have on you wherever you are adventuring. The first thing you will notice when you pick it up is the weight, or lack of it — the Skeletool weighs just 5.0oz (142g). This is because the Skeletool has had holes drilled wherever possible to cut down weight without sacrificing strength.
You are, however, sacrificing the number of tools to get down to this weight. But Leatherman have done a great job of picking tools you're likely to use regularly. The Skeletool contains 7 tools and 2 bits:
- Needlenose pliers — one of the two main tools, it packs inside the Skeletool and is available for use when unfolded.
- Regular pliers — the secondary tool on the needlenose pliers.
- Wire cutters — at the base of the pliers.
- 420HC combo knife — the second primary tool. It unfolds from the Skeletool's arm and the two arms provide an ergonomically shaped grip. The knife is half serrated and the cut-out hole makes it easy to grip to open.
- Carabiner clip/bottle opener — allows you to easily clip the knife onto a belt loop or rucksack, and cleverly doubles as a bottle opener.
- Large bit driver — includes Phillips #1 and #2, and flathead 3/16″ and 1/4″.
All Leatherman tools have a 25-year warranty as standard.
In summary, the Leatherman Skeletool is a great, lightweight, robust tool. Every function has been designed to work at its best, and what you get are 7 tools you'd be happy using as main tools. Other multi-tools may have more functions, but many you wouldn't seriously consider using because they don't grip right or feel strong enough. The Skeletool proves less is more.
