How to Layer Clothing for UK Winter Camping

UK winter camping rarely means extreme cold in absolute terms — it's more often a damp, penetrating, changeable cold that catches people out precisely because it doesn't look dangerous on paper. Getting layering right isn't about buying the warmest single item you can find; it's about building a system of layers that each do a specific job and that you can add or remove as your activity level and the weather change through the day. Get the system right and you stay warm and dry through a cold, wet Welsh hillside or a frosty Peak District night. Get it wrong and you end up either shivering or soaked in your own sweat — both of which get dangerous fast once you stop moving.

The three-layer system

Layering works on a simple principle: each layer has one job, and they work together rather than any single layer trying to do everything. The three core layers are a base layer, a mid layer, and an outer shell, with extremities handled separately.

Base layer: moisture management, not warmth

The base layer sits against your skin, and its job is to move sweat away from your body, not to keep you warm on its own. This is the layer where fabric choice matters most, and it's where the single biggest mistake happens: wearing cotton.

Cotton absorbs moisture and holds onto it, rather than moving it away from your skin. Once a cotton base layer is damp — from sweat, rain, or condensation — it stays damp, and wet fabric conducts heat away from your body far faster than dry fabric. Combine that with a cold wind and you have the exact recipe for hypothermia, which is why hillwalking and camping guidance so consistently repeats "cotton kills" as a rule of thumb. Merino wool and synthetic base layers (polyester or polypropylene blends) instead wick moisture away from the skin and continue to insulate even when they're damp, which is the entire point of the layer. Merino has the added benefit of resisting odour over multiple days' wear, which matters more than it sounds on a multi-day trip when washing isn't an option.

Mid layer: trapping warm air

The mid layer's job is insulation — trapping a layer of air warmed by your body heat close to you. Fleece is the classic, reliable choice: it's warm for its weight, dries quickly if it does get damp, and breathes well enough to avoid trapping sweat. Synthetic or down insulated jackets do the same job with a better warmth-to-weight ratio, which matters more when you're carrying gear a long way, though down loses much of its insulating ability when wet unless it's a hydrophobic-treated down, which is worth checking before relying on it in damp UK conditions.

The mid layer is also the one you'll adjust most often through the day — adding it at rest stops and in camp, removing it while you're actively hiking and generating your own heat, which is exactly why it needs to be easy to get on and off over what you're wearing underneath.

Outer shell: keeping the weather out

The outer layer's job is blocking wind and rain, not providing warmth itself — a good shell over a t-shirt in still air won't keep you warm, but a poor shell over great insulation in wind and rain will leave you cold and wet regardless. Look for a genuinely waterproof, breathable fabric (a hydrostatic head rating gives you a rough guide to water resistance) with taped seams, since even a good fabric leaks at un-taped stitching. Breathability matters as much as waterproofing: a shell that keeps rain out but traps all your sweat inside leaves you just as damp as one that lets rain in, so look at both figures rather than just the waterproof rating.

Extremities: where most heat is actually lost

It's often said that most body heat is lost through the head, and while the often-repeated "40-50% through your head" figure is an oversimplification (heat loss is roughly proportional to how much skin is exposed, and the head is simply the part most often left uncovered), the practical advice holds up: a hat makes a disproportionate difference to how warm you feel, because it's usually the one part of the body left bare when everything else is layered up. Feet are the other major loss point, particularly if boots and socks get damp — a decent pair of insulated, moisture-wicking socks (again, avoid cotton) and dry boots matter more to overall warmth than most people expect. Gloves or mittens (mittens are warmer, since fingers share heat rather than each losing it individually) and a buff or neck gaiter to seal the gap at your collar round out the system.

Regulate by removing layers before you sweat, not after

This is the single most useful practical habit in cold-weather camping: adjust your layers proactively, before you start sweating, rather than reactively once you're already damp. Sweat that soaks into your base and mid layers takes a long time to dry in cold, damp UK conditions, and once it's there it actively cools you down rather than keeping you warm — exactly the opposite of what you need. In practice, that means stripping off your mid layer or unzipping your shell at the start of an uphill section, before you feel warm, rather than waiting until you're sweating and then taking layers off too late. Equally, put layers back on at rest stops before you start to feel the chill, since it's far easier to stay warm than to rewarm once you've properly cooled down. Small, frequent adjustments beat big ones made too late.

Putting it together

A sensible winter camping layering setup looks something like: a merino or synthetic base layer, a fleece or insulated mid layer, a waterproof/windproof shell, insulated moisture-wicking socks, a warm hat, and gloves or mittens — with the mid layer and shell being the pieces you'll add and remove most through the day as conditions and effort levels change. None of this needs to be expensive to work; it needs to follow the right principles, with cotton avoided throughout and adjustments made before you're already too hot or too cold.
