How to Choose a Backpacking Tent

A backpacking tent is one of the few pieces of kit where the wrong choice genuinely ruins a trip — too heavy and it slows you down, too flimsy and a wet British weekend becomes miserable. Here's what actually matters when choosing one, without getting distracted by marketing claims.

Freestanding vs trekking-pole (non-freestanding) designs

Freestanding tents use their own dedicated pole set to hold their shape, so they can be pitched on hard ground, rock, or decking without needing pegs to stand up (though you should still peg them out for stability in wind). They're generally quicker and more forgiving to pitch, which matters when you're tired or the midges are out.

Trekking-pole (non-freestanding) tents use your walking poles as the structure instead of carrying dedicated tent poles, saving meaningful weight — often several hundred grams. The trade-off is a fussier pitch: they need firm, peg-friendly ground and a bit of practice to get taut and storm-worthy. Good for weight-focused backpackers on established trails; less ideal for rocky Scottish summits or soft bog where pegs won't bite.

Season rating: what UK conditions actually need

Tents are usually rated 2-season, 3-season, or 4-season. A 2-season tent is a fair-weather summer-only shelter with minimal wind and rain resistance — not really suited to UK hills even in summer, where weather can turn quickly. A 4-season (or "mountain") tent is built for snow loading and sustained high winds, with a lower profile and beefier poles — overkill and unnecessarily heavy for most UK backpacking.

For the vast majority of UK trips — lowland trails, moorland, and most hill walking outside of winter mountaineering conditions — a solid 3-season tent is the right call. It's built to handle wind, rain, and cooler nights without the weight and cost of a full winter design. Only step up to 4-season if you're specifically planning winter mountain camping.

Hydrostatic head: what the number actually means

Hydrostatic head (HH) measures how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before it starts to leak, expressed in millimetres — it's the height of a water column the fabric can hold back. Higher numbers mean better waterproofing, but also usually mean heavier, less breathable fabric, so it's a trade-off rather than "bigger is always better".

As a rough guide: 1,000–1,500mm will cope with light, short-lived rain. For genuine UK weather — sustained rain, driven by wind, over multiple days — look for at least 3,000mm on the flysheet, and ideally more if you expect to pitch on exposed ground where the fabric gets pressed against you or your gear. The groundsheet should generally be rated higher again (often 5,000–10,000mm+) since it takes direct pressure from your body weight and any standing water underneath.

Packed weight vs trail weight

Manufacturers often list two figures. "Trail weight" (sometimes "minimum weight") is just the flysheet, inner, and poles — the minimum needed to pitch. "Packed weight" adds pegs, guylines, stuff sacks, and any repair kit — everything you'd actually carry. The gap between the two can be 200–400g, so always compare packed weight when weighing up options, and check whether a listed weight is per tent or per person for shared two-person designs.

Porch and vestibule space

The porch (vestibule) is the covered area between the inner tent door and the outer flysheet door — and in UK conditions it earns its keep. It's where wet boots, a soaked pack, and cooking gear live, and a decent-sized porch lets you cook under cover during the frequent spells of rain that come with UK backpacking. A cramped porch might save weight but makes wet-weather camp life noticeably harder; if you're regularly out in autumn/winter or on multi-day trips, prioritise porch space over shaving off the last 100g.

Pitching style: inner-first vs flysheet-first

Inner-first tents are pitched by erecting the mesh/fabric inner first, then throwing the flysheet over the top. This is common on lighter, warmer-climate designs but is a real problem in UK rain — the inner gets soaked before the waterproof layer goes up.

Flysheet-first (or all-in-one) designs let you pitch the waterproof outer first, keeping the inner dry throughout, then attach or hang the inner underneath afterwards. This is the far more practical choice for UK conditions, where pitching in the rain is a genuine likelihood rather than an edge case — it's worth checking this specifically before buying rather than assuming.

Ventilation and condensation

Condensation is less about a "faulty" tent and more about physics — warm, moist air from breathing and damp gear meeting cold flysheet fabric overnight. Look for mesh panels on the inner tent, adjustable vents on the flysheet (ideally ones that can stay open even when it's raining), and a flysheet that's pitched with enough gap from the inner to let air circulate. Fully sealing yourself in on a still, humid night all but guarantees a damp sleeping bag by morning, so don't be tempted to close every vent just because it's cold.

Groundsheet and footprint

A tent's built-in groundsheet needs to be tough enough to resist punctures from stones, roots, and rough ground, and a "bathtub" design — where the groundsheet extends a few inches up the tent walls before the seam — keeps out surface water pooling in wet conditions, which matters a lot on UK campsites and boggy pitches. A separate footprint (a fitted groundsheet protector that goes underneath) adds protection and can extend the life of the tent floor, at the cost of a bit of extra weight and packed size — worth it if you regularly camp on rough or wet ground.

How much should you spend?

UK backpacking tent prices roughly fall into three bands. Budget (under about £150) typically means heavier fabrics, lower HH ratings, and less refined pitching — fine for occasional summer trips but a compromise for regular UK use. Mid-range (roughly £150–£350) is where most competent 3-season backpacking tents sit, with decent HH ratings, sensible weights, and flysheet-first pitching becoming standard. Premium (£350+) buys lighter materials (often more advanced fabrics or higher-denier ripstop), refined weight savings, and better long-term durability — worth it for frequent multi-day use, less so for a couple of trips a year.
