The CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2013 was out, published by CAMRA — the Campaign for Real Ale — an independent, voluntary organisation campaigning for real ale, community pubs and consumer rights.
The Good Beer Guide 2013 was the 40th edition of the UK's best-selling beer and pub guide. Every year it's fully updated to feature the best pubs across the UK that serve real ale.
The guide is independent — pubs can't pay to get in. Instead, listings are based on votes from CAMRA members, real ale drinkers and pub-goers like you and me, so every pub on the list deserves its place.
As well as listing pubs, a breweries chapter details all breweries that produce real ale in the UK and the beers they're known for — not just the national breweries, but regional and micro too. Beers also come with tasting notes, so if you're off on holiday or looking for a good hike you can plan a route past a CAMRA-recognised pub and know which ale to pick.
The guide had very few Amazon reviews at the time, given how new it was, but scored 5 out of 5 from those it had, with one reviewer calling it "an essential purchase for anyone looking for GOOD BEER", noting it's not a guide to good food or ambience but an honest description including parking, bus routes, garden, noise level, food and an OS grid reference for out-in-the-sticks pubs, compiled by CAMRA members for no reward or industry back-handers.
