Buff Merino Wool Neck Gaiter Review

The original Buff tube-style neck gaiter has been a fixture in outdoor kit bags for years, and the Merino Wool version takes the same simple tube-of-fabric idea and swaps in a natural fibre that performs noticeably better across a wider range of UK camping and hiking conditions than the original polyester version. It's a small, cheap item that ends up getting far more use than its size suggests.

What it is

The Buff Merino Wool is a seamless tube of 100% ethically-sourced merino wool fabric, sold in the Lightweight weight at around 125g/m² (Buff also makes a heavier Midweight version for colder use). Being a single stretchy tube of fabric with no fastenings, it can be worn a dozen or so different ways — as a neck gaiter, headband, wristband, hat, or pulled up over the nose and mouth as a makeshift balaclava — which is the whole point of the original Buff design. What merino wool adds over the standard polyester Buff is natural temperature regulation (it keeps you warm when it's cold and doesn't overheat as easily when you're working hard), genuine odour resistance over multi-day wear, and moisture-wicking that still works when damp, unlike synthetic fabrics that can feel clammy once wet.

It's genuinely lightweight and packs down to almost nothing — you can screw it into a ball smaller than a fist — so it's an easy thing to always have in a jacket pocket or pack lid rather than a considered packing decision.

Pros

Cons

Who it's for

It suits hikers, backpackers and campers who want one lightweight, packable item that covers sun protection, light cold-weather neck and face coverage, and general versatility across a UK camping season — spring through autumn especially, where temperatures swing through the day. For serious winter cold where you need real insulation around the neck and face, the heavier Midweight merino Buff or a dedicated fleece neck warmer is the better call, but as an everyday piece of kit that earns its place in almost any pack, the Lightweight Merino Wool version is hard to fault.

Our verdict

The Buff Merino Wool is one of those unglamorous items that quietly proves itself useful trip after trip — light, packable, genuinely versatile, and a clear step up from the standard polyester Buff for temperature regulation and odour control. It's a small spend that's easy to recommend for anyone who spends regular time outdoors.
